Metric definitions
How visitors, visits, page views, bounce rate and the other numbers are calculated.
Every number in the dashboard is exact: Loomduct never samples. Numbers follow the project's time zone, and sessions with a bot event are left out.
Visits
A visit (also called a session) is a group of events from one visitor, with no break longer than 30 minutes.
- A visit starts with a page view or a custom event. A page leave or web vitals event never starts a visit.
- A new visit also starts when the visitor comes back from another source: a different referrer, campaign tag or ad click id. Clicks inside your site have no outside referrer, so they never start a new visit.
- A visit counts in the hour, day or month it started.
The numbers
| Number | How it is calculated |
|---|---|
| Unique visitors | The number of different visitors with a visit in the period. A visitor counts once, also with many visits. |
| Total visits | The number of visits that started in the period. |
| Pageviews | The number of $pageview events in those visits. |
| Views per visit | Pageviews divided by visits. |
| Visit duration | The average time from the first to the last event of a visit, in seconds. One-event visits count as 0. |
| Bounce rate | The share of visits with exactly one page view. Custom events do not change this. |
| Online now | Visitors with an event in the last 5 minutes. |
The unique visitors of a period are not the sum of the unique visitors of its days: someone who visits on Monday and Tuesday is one visitor for the week.
Time on page and scroll depth
When a visitor leaves a page or hides the tab, the SDK sends a $pageleave event with:
- Time on page: only the time the tab was visible and its window had focus. Time in a background tab does not count.
- Scroll depth: how far down the page the visitor scrolled, from 0 to 100%. Pages that scroll inside a container, not the whole window, report no scroll depth.
You see both on the page leave events on the Events page and in a visitor's timeline. They are not summed up on the Overview yet.
Card numbers
In the Pages, Sources, Locations and Devices cards, each row counts unique visitors. In the Events card, each row counts events.
A visit takes its source, location and device from its first event, so all events of a visit have the same values.
